Inuit Nunangat and Guatemala

I recently came across a fascinating article titled, “What to Do when an Indigenous Language Disappears.” It’s about Guatemala, but as I read it, I found myself wondering about the extent to which it could be describing Inuit Nunangat. Maybe there are no similarities, but I’d be interested in what others think.

Absolutely, there are mirrored experiences as well as current realities, vis-a-vis Inuit. Once communities within Inuit Nunangat reconciles the paradigms and intersections of identity (culture and language) with economic participation and success, we may see a more natural everyday movement towards a normalized use of Inuktitut. Instead, we continue to see kids and their spheres of influence tied up in circles, contemplating trade offs.
