Inuit Nunangat and Guatemala

I recently came across a fascinating article titled, “What to do when an Indigenous Language Disappears.” It’s about Guatemala, but as I read it, I found myself wondering about the extent to which it could be describing Inuit Nunangat. Absolutely, there are mirrored experiences as well as current realities, vis-a-vis Inuit. Once communities within Inuit Nunangat reconciles the paradigms and intersections of identity (culture and language) with economic participation and success, we may see a more natural everyday movement towards a normalized use of Inuktitut. Instead, we continue to see kids and their spheres of influence tied up in circles, contemplating trade offs.
