The Nunatsiavut Government and Memorial University of Newfoundland have partnered to deliver a culturally-infused, community-based Bachelor of Education program in Goose Bay, Labrador. This Inuit-specific program is part of Nunatsiavut’s efforts to establish a strong foundation for Inuit-controlled schools in their region. Filmmaker Mark Sandiford and researcher Shelley Tulloch joined Nunatsiavut’s Inuit Bachelor of Education students, faculty and staff to document this innovative program. The resulting documentary, “Formation of Inspiration”, tells the students’ stories of the challenges they face in becoming teachers, their successes, and their visions for an Inuit-governed school system in Nunatsiavut. Their stories show how, in addition to following Memorial University’s rigorous Bachelor of Education program, they are also reconnecting to their language, cultural traditions, Elders and their land, and learning to use these as resources to transform the way Inuit children go to school. They are learning about who they are, where they come from, and affirming their commitment to work together to strengthen their communities.
